Artist Touch

Posted on May 28, 2012 by JoBeth Gilliam

‘Hats Off” was selected for the new Artist Touch publication…this painting is 22×30 and the photo reference was an outdoor market covered with Guatemalan goods.  All of the colorful belts, bags, shirts, hats and scarves where like a rainbow of hues and shapes…

Mr. Palette

Silence is golden...duct tape is silver

Think Abouts

Breaking rules forces the painter to design and compose creatively.....

Most color values are exposed in light and mid values...although dark's can vibrate with deep reds, blues or greens....

Mud is created by the hand holding the brush...

There is freedom when color is my color.... being the CEO of my painting...

Nature is not in the painting business...

Don't fill in the blanks with what you know!!!!

Drawing from a photograph the subject will become stiff and predictable if every line is included in the composition. Keep some lines flowing and out of order....then it becomes a painting..not a painting of the photograph...

Brush strokes can become boring stroke after stroke...so paint as though the brush has rhythm..

Keep the viewer guessing what size brush you use...

Details make for good reading....details in painting become predictable...

A painting should look better than the photograph....
